Early Monday, State Representative Johnny Shaw presented a check from the State to Lane College in the amount of $150,000. This funding will create opportunities for the health and well-being of Lane’s students, faculty, and staff.
“Well, the wellness program here is an opportunity for students to get some extra training, to reach out to some of the seniors in the community to make sure that they are not only well, but stay well, check on them periodically, that type of thing, and to kind of give them a sense of what real life is like once they leave the campus,” Shaw said.
A wide range of wellness initiatives will be implemented on campus, including group fitness programs, mental health workshops, recreational sports, and stress management resources.
“Our students have a unique opportunity with this investment to lean in to improving their fitness and their wellness,” said Dr. Donald Comer, Lane College President. “The money will be invested largely around three spaces: some renovations to our football practice field which will now become a shared use field for the football intramurals and student wellness.”
Lane’s outdoor volleyball facility will also receive some upgrades.
The remainder of the funds will go towards installing wellness areas around the campus that students and faculty can enjoy.
“We’re very happy, very appreciative,” said Lane Student Ambassador Rodriquez Murphy. “We’re looking for things to help the students who are not athletes, but people who want to get engaged, so we’re very blessed.”
“It’s our future,” Shaw said. “It’s my kids. It’s my grandkids, my neighbor’s kids, your kids. That’s the importance of it.”
Several exciting fitness programs are coming to Lane, including yoga, softball, flag football, and more.
One student says he’s excited to see the campus come to life.
