Florida-based cannabis company, Trulieve Cannabis Corp, has teamed up with Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) for a medical cannabis research study and education initiative.
The cannabis company signed a research, education and development agreement with MSM. They will assist MSM with their cannabis-related research operations, as well as offer educational courses.
This agreement includes the creation of courses and seminars that will teach students about medical cannabis production, purification, use, clinical outcomes and commercialization. Other efforts will include medical cannabis career fairs for students, as well as internship programs for the MSM and Atlanta University Center students. There will even be new minors or medical cannabis sub-specialty offerings in the MSM’s graduate programs.
This collaboration marks a first for the United States, and this partnership is the first step toward personalized medical cannabis treatment.
“We have always placed our patients at the forefront of our business operations and are excited to partner with MSM,” said Kim Rivers, Trulieve CEO. “This partnership will enhance the cannabis community with the research and education necessary to facilitate the growth of a critical consumer industry and we look forward to collaborating with the tremendous team at the Morehouse School of Medicine.”
One of the goals is to further develop a real-world data registry on medical cannabis. This includes research into the exploration of cannabinoid receptor genetics and the potential uses of medical cannabis.
The duo also plans to bring in another partner, TruGenomix, Inc., which is a veteran-owned small business that was founded and led by minorities, for gene sequencing services.
“When it comes to medical cannabis treatment and research as a whole, we have only scratched the surface of its potential and healing power,” said Sandra Harris-Hooker, Ph.D., MSM Vice President and Executive Dean. “That’s why we could not be more excited about this partnership with Trulieve as we take steps to provide resources and education to the community, while also conducting research that will play a huge role in furthering the effectiveness and accuracy of cannabis treatment.”
