At one point in his career, rapper, producer, business mogul and philanthropist Master P (aka Percy Miller) wanted to have his own NBA team. Now, he’s changed his tune and instead of venturing into sports, he is putting his impact to good use with plans to own an HBCU.

The 50-year-old ‘No Limits Record’ founder took to Instagram to announce his plans to acquire an HBCU. In his video he says, “This message is all about educating our people. Anybody that’s listening to this and has a business, I want y’all to join this movement with me. We need to make sure our kids get educated the way other the cultures are educated. And that funding is put back into our education. We gotta change the narrative and it’s going to be with economic empowerment.”

As more attention is placed on HBCUs, knowledge has come to light that the majority of these colleges and universities were funded by land grants during the Reconstruction Era. In an effort to change the future of HBCUs, Master P, who originally wanted to attend Southern University when he was younger, has decided to change the course of funding and start an institution.

He went on to further explain that HBCUs produce more graduating women than any other type of higher education institution.

“More women graduate from HBCUs than any other university and I love that,” he wrote in his Instagram caption. “If we’re going to change the narrative, it has to start with the truth. I was shocked when I Googled who owned and founded HBCUs. We can’t change the past, but we can change the future by investing in the next generation.”
