The Office of HBCU Outreach educates the public and builds strategic alliances that support North Carolina’s Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse workforce, and it is one of the most important segments of the department.
It’s office continuously centers its efforts on innovation, development, research and education so that the state’s highways, roadways, streets, pathways, and all other public transit systems remain safe, operational, efficient and vital to the people of North Carolina.
Every year, The Office of HBCU Outreach coordinates student internships that are guided by NCDOT professionals. These industry experts help HCBU students further learn about the transportation industry.
The initiative also grants students attending North Carolina HBCUs scholarships under the North Carolina HBCU/MSI Transportation Scholarship.
According to NCDOT’s website, the HBCU/MSI Transportation Scholarship Program was created “to expand and diversify talent in the transportation industry by providing financial assistance to highly-motivated students of North Carolina’s historically black colleges and universities or minority-serving institutions who are pursuing undergraduate and master’s degrees in transportation-related fields.”
To qualify for the scholarship, students must also have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be enrolled at a qualifying North Carolina HBCU or Minority Serving Institution or be a confirmed graduating senior.
This year’s recipients of the scholarship include students from Bennett College, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Shaw University and UNC Pembroke.
