Four female scientists launch “Black Scientist Cooperative” podcast to empower Black community

These four women, scientists and HBCU graduates created a brand new podcast all about the science behind healthcare. The four hosts, Dr. Charletha V. Irvin Joseph, Dr. Myla Patterson-Smith, Dr. Elethia Tillman and Dr. Shuntae Williams, debuted their “Black Scientist Cooperative” Podcast in an effort to share their expertise on both science and healthcare with the Black community.

The main premise of the podcast is to take often-complicated scientific and healthcare information and present them in a simple-to-understand manner for listeners. Their motto is to “make data simple.” According to a press release, the mission of the podcast is to empower the Black community so they can make informed, science-based decisions on health and wellness.

The Podcast covers a broad range of topics including the science behind the COVID-19 vaccines, the origins of health disparities and more. It regularly features subject matter experts from around the world who can offer greater insight about specific topics.

Dr. Irvin Joseph, Dr. Patterson-Smith and Dr. Williams all hold doctorate degrees in Biomedical Science. Dr. Patterson-Smith specializes in medical devices and biotechnology, Dr. Williams’ focus is biomarker discovery and development and Dr. Irvin Joseph translates research, basic science and innovation into safe and feasible clinical processes and treatments for patients.

Holding doctorate degrees in Biomedical Science, Cardiovascular Physiology and Cell Signaling is Dr. Tillman. She helps undergraduate students appreciate and apply advanced biological concepts and theories for healthcare and research professionals.
