Honor student Alexis L. Evans has a natural concern for the welfare of people, and that’s why she’ll be earning her degree in Healthcare Administration in the College of Health Sciences during Jackson State University’s commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, in the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
“I had a grandmother who died in a nursing home, so I needed to be in the health care field to make a change,” Evans said. “Also, there’s a lack of African Americans in the field as a whole, so I would like to help diversify it as well.”
There’s yet another motivation for her. She’s following in the footsteps of her father, who also works in healthcare administration. However, he handles risk management and workers’ compensation.
A native of Plano, Texas, Evans said she’s grateful for all the experiences at JSU. While a student, Evans actively served as a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Omega Nu National Honor Society.
“Jackson State University means a lot to me because I have been exposed to many educational and self-improvement experiences and opportunities that have groomed me in the physical, social, spiritual, mental and academic aspects that made me a better person and student. The teachers and classmates who I came in contact with helped me to learn, explore and mature.”
Evans will begin graduate school in 2022, majoring in Healthcare Administration at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
Ultimately, she wants to become a health care administrator/CEO of a hospital after completing an internship at Medical City Lewisville in Texas. As an administrator, she envisions a career that would allow her to develop strategic planning, manage physician relationships and review data for efficiency and high-quality care.
She credits her soon-to-be alma mater for opening many opportunities.
“I’ve always tried to make the best of every situation, so enrolling at Jackson State University was an excellent choice. The professors and classmates constantly helped me to gain skills, knowledge and networks that are beneficial in my professional and personal endeavors.”
As well, Evans said she’s grateful for the support of “family, mentors, professors and classmates because each and every one played an influential and impactful part in my success. You contributed your time, effort, knowledge and skills to improving me on a daily basis.”
Now, she’s preparing to reciprocate.
“Because of what JSU has done for me, my future plan is to give back to my alma mater and help students the same way I have been helped, or better,” Evans said.
