By Fayetteville State University,
Three Fayetteville State University Biology students, Christa Dudley, Sy’Keria Garrison, and Kimberly Obi are scholars in Dr. Danielle Graham’s microbiology research laboratory. Dr. Graham’s lab focuses on characterizing antibiotic-resistant bacteria, identifying novel antimicrobials from environmental microorganisms, and developing strategies to target biofilm formation. Dr. Graham is an alumna of FSU, an Assistant Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Biological and Forensic Sciences and serves as the Assistant Chair. She received a $180,000 National Science Foundation grant that provides research funding and strengthens STEM undergraduate education and research at HBCUs.
Christa is a senior majoring in Biology with a concentration in Organismal Biology and a minor in Spanish. At the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS), she presented her research project entitled “Discovery of Antimicrobials that Inhibit Gram-Negative Bacteria Growth”. Christa’s presentation was one of 320 selected to showcase their skills, talents, and academic achievements. Sy’Keria is a senior majoring in Biology with a concentration in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology and a minor in Chemistry. Sy’Keria has participated in summer research programs at Johns Hopkins University and UNC-Chapel Hill. She has presented research projects at several conferences, including SNCURCS and the NC American Society of Microbiology (ASM). Kimberly is a senior majoring in Biology with a concentration in Organismal Biology. She was selected to participate in the NSF-funded summer research program at FSU in summer 2021 and continued her research studies throughout the fall semester.
