On Saturday, May 7th, Virginia Union University (VUU) held its 123rd Commencement exercises on Hovey Field in Richmond, Virginia.

Among the graduates that walked the stage, Delegate Marcia “Cia” Price, representative of Virginia’s 95th District, graduated as valedictorian from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology. Delegate Price is the 5th VUU graduate currently serving in the Virginia legislature.

“At VUU we want our students to be socially responsible, engaged in their communities and upholding their civic duties,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of the university. “From L. Douglas Wilder, the first elected African American governor since Reconstruction to Delegate Nadarius Clark, who made history as the youngest to be elected to the Virginia General Assembly, we are proud of our rich history of molding change agents within our nation.”

Other notable alumni who currently serve in the state legislature include Representative of Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, A. Donald McEachin, who received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree at the commencement exercises, Delegates Delores McQuinn (D-70), Luke E. Torian (D-52) and Nadarius Clark (D-79). Many other notable alumni serve within local governing bodies throughout the state of Virginia.

Social justice leader and movement strategist, Tamika Mallory, delivered the commencement address. Mallory was also one of four Honorary Degree recipients, receiving an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
