The walls of the Blanche. M Francis Musical Building Recital Hall echoed with melodic voices of the performance showcase, The Musical Revue, on April 12, 2022, as presented by the Opera Workshop of the Music Department at Xavier University of Louisiana. The Musical Revue featured hit songs from playbills ranging from The Color Purple to Les MisƩrables performed by staff and students, including a special performance by the Xavier Gospel Choir.

ā€œThe Musical Revue was a truly transformative experience for me as a teacher and artist. Xavierā€™s Opera program has a long history of collaboration and inclusion across campus, so what a way to honor that legacy,ā€ said Dr. Sakinah Davis, an assistant professor in the music department and producer behind Musical Revue. ā€œThere are so many artistically talented students at Xavier eager to share their talents both onstage and behind the scenes, and we were truly blessed to have so many come forward and pull together to create this project.ā€

Using only chairs, creative lighting, and minimal props, The Musical Revue gave the performers center stage and highlighted their choreography and powerful voices.

ā€œThe Musical Review was very meaningful to me. As a performer, you can sometimes forget to enjoy the work you put into a performance,ā€ explained Ahmir Trotter, a senior music liberal arts major. ā€œI want to thank and shout out Dr. Sakinah Davis, who brought together students from different departments at Xavier University, and truly showed us the importance of coming together to enjoy the magic that can be made through teamwork and courage.ā€

Staff were also a part of the production, showing the inclusivity of diversity and willingness of staff to demonstrate their talents while connecting with students.

ā€œBeing a part of the Xavier Musical Revue was a dream come true,ā€ expressed Regi Reyes, manager of Media Relations and Communications at Xavier. ā€œI am so lucky to have had a front-seat to all the incredible talent of the Xavierites in the show. I am prodigiously grateful for the experience.ā€

As for up-and-coming productions, Xavierā€™s Department of Music is not done yet and is currently working on its next performance.

ā€œAll of this makes me super excited for what the Department of Music has in store for the Xavier community next year; stay tuned!ā€ said Dr. Davis.
