The Montgomery (AL) Chapter on behalf of the Southern Area of The Links, Incorporated has awarded one of Alabama State University’s deserving students a $5,000 Servant Leader Scholarship to offset a portion of the cost of the student’s education.
Nicholas “Nick” Mosely, a junior majoring in psychology, was presented the scholarship during a formal ceremony on Aug. 23, with ASU officials, including Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Col. Gregory Clark, and The Links representatives Sophia Johnson and Denise Vaughn in attendance. Links chapter president Ann Sippial was unable to attend.
“The scholarship is to help Nick pay for his tuition and books. He is a wonderful servant leader scholar. Our chapter is also going to partner with him and mentor him throughout the year and invite him to functions, making sure he is prepared when he graduates for the real world,” said Johnson, who is also a member of the chapter’s HBCU committee.
She explained that the award is representative of the Montgomery Chapter’s deep commitment to the success of students enrolled in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
“This is the second time that the Montgomery Chapter has given a $5,000 scholarship to an ASU student. Last year’s recipient was Jeremi Moore, who is now the SGA President. So, it’s a total of $10,000 from the local chapter,” Johnson noted.
Mosely, who is on the men’s track and field team, said he is deeply appreciative of this financial support.
“It is definitely a blessing because I’ve been provided an opportunity to continue pursuing my dreams of finishing college with minimized hurdles. It has provided less financial stress for me and my family. I wish to thank the Links’ Montgomery Chapter for this award and ASU for connecting me with the resources that I need to be successful in a life serving others,” Mosely said.
With a major in psychology with a concentration in sports therapy, Mosely emphasized that he wants to play a major role in helping other athletes,
“Being an athlete, there’s a lot of mental health problems that people don’t see behind the scenes. I want to help people, athletes, to cope better—mentally, physically and emotionally—as they continue with their lives.”
After graduation, the Pittsburgh, California, native plans to receive his master’s in psychology and then a Ph.D. “I want to become the first Dr. Mosely in my family.”
