The School of Art, Sciences, and Humanities and the James E. Cheek Learning Resource Center are delighted to bring to campus the art exhibition – “Give Black Raleigh Her Flowers Now” located in the Atrium of Cheek Library. Curated by Courtney Napier and produced by Black Oak Society “Give Black Raleigh Her Flowers Now” is a group exhibition of original art created to venerate the Black women who have built and continue to contribute to our Capital City. Among the women honored are three Shaw University graduates, Francis Lonnette Williams, Aerial Sanders, and Crystal Sanders. Anthony Fitzpatrick, one of the exhibition’s photographers, is also a proud Shaw Bear.
This exhibition is an invitation to anyone interested in the arts and the contributions by Black artists to Shaw University’s campus to celebrate its dedication to both the study of the Arts and Humanities and the preservation of Raleigh’s remarkable Black history.
Black Oak Society — a collective of some of Raleigh’s brightest Black creatives — is honored to be in partnership with one of our country’s pioneering Black institutions of higher learning. We look forward to sharing the significance of Shaw University, its esteemed alumni, and our other phenomenal Raleigh’s matriarchs through powerful and moving photographs that comprise the “Give Black Raleigh Her Flowers” exhibition.
We are also delighted to offer a series of events during October, November and December co-sponsored by The Links, Inc. and VAE. The exhibit is open now and visitors are welcome to enjoy the exhibition during the Library’s hours of operation.
