The entertainment mogul delivered those words during Alabama State University’s virtual 2023 Honors Day Convocation on Friday, April 21.
She told the students to believe that they can become whatever they want. “You are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and more capable than you can ever imagine… So, believe in what you are right now, winners.”
There will be challenges in life, Edmonds pointed out, with some facing more than others. “It’s how you handle those challenges that will set you apart from the rest….You will learn from every challenge and every challenge will make you stronger.”
Betting on yourself, she said, entails being in control of your life. “For me, I learned that my best life was when I was in control of my life. So, when writing the story of your life, don’t let anyone else hold the pen. Keep your life in your hands. You have the power to create that beautiful life that you want.”
The virtual ceremony featured much of the traditional “pomp and circumstance” associated with the familiar on-campus convocation, such as the playing of the National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,“ and the Posting of Colors. The convocation recognizes regularly admitted undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement throughout their academic pursuits.
