Morehouse School of Medicine is proud to announce that President and CEO Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, FACOG, has received the 2023 Scroll of Merit Award from the National Medical Association (NMA), the organization’s highest honor. The award was presented to Dr. Montgomery Rice on July 29, 2023, during the Opening Honors and Awards event at the National Medical Association Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“I am deeply honored to receive the 2023 Scroll of Merit Award from the National Medical Association,” Dr. Montgomery Rice said. “For 125 years, the NMA has been the leading voice for African American physicians and works tirelessly to eliminate health disparities that disproportionately impact Black and brown people. I am grateful to be recognized by my NMA colleagues and look forward to many more years of continued collaboration as we strive to achieve global health equity and health justice.”

The NMA Scroll of Merit Award is bestowed upon individuals “whose efforts and contributions have been preeminent in medicine, health advocacy, or service to the National Medical Association,” the organization said.

“A transformational leader, a renowned infertility specialist and researcher, a fierce advocate for women’s health, and a prominent voice for health equity are only a few of the accolades I would use to describe Dr. Montgomery Rice and her most distinguished career of service in the realms of academia and medicine,” said NMA President Garfield A. Clunie, MD. “We also recognize the historic significance of her service as the first female President and CEO of Morehouse School of Medicine and the outstanding job she has done to enhance the student pipeline and increase diversity in the science and healthcare workforce. Dr. Montgomery Rice’s accomplishments and contributions to the elimination of disparities that permeate all facets of the African American life experience in this country truly exemplify the core principles of the National Medical Association and the Scroll of Merit Award.”
