The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a historically Black institution, has recently renewed a scholarship program dedicated to students from Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury, Maryland.
The scholarship agreement aims to provide a financial incentive for Wor-Wic students to attend the HBCU upon completing their associate’s degree. As part of the agreement, the application fee is waived for all Wor-Wic students applying to UMES. For those students who are accepted to UMES, each will be provided with $3,500 annually to support their in-state tuition for up to six semesters of study at the HBCU. Additionally, three students from Wor-Wic will receive full-ride presidential scholarships worth over $8,585 annually.
“When we signed our most recent MOU with Wor-Wic three years ago, we wanted to ensure that the dream of an affordable college education would be a reality,” said UMES president Heidi M. Anderson. “Since that time, we’ve seen the overwhelming success of Wor-Wic students who transfer to UMES. Their graduation rates are 12 percent higher than the average rate based on National Student Clearinghouse data. This scholarship program is another step in the seamless transition to receiving a bachelor’s degree and soaring towards future success.”
