President Joe Biden will deliver a farewell address to the country next Wednesday, the White House announced on Friday.
His speech will be delivered from the Oval Office, a location typically reserved for momentous occasions and major news.
The White House did not release additional details about what the president would discuss.
Biden’s speech will come less than a week before his political rival, President-elect Donald Trump, is inaugurated.
NBC News previously reported that Biden planned to deliver two major speeches — including a farewell address— about his legacy before he leaves the White House.
During farewell addresses, presidents have traditionally run through their proudest achievements, wished the incoming administration luck and reflected on the state of the country.
Trump delivered his farewell address four years earlier, though it was pre-recorded. During his speech, he said he extended “our best wishes” to the then-incoming Biden administration, saying that the country would “pray for its success in keeping America safe and prosperous.”
Former President Barack Obama during his 2017 speech discussed the state of democracy, noting that “our democracy is threatened whenever we take it for granted.”
