HBCU catches attention as Shreveport Kickoff Classic announced

By Steven Corder

A legacy that began over a century ago roars back to life this fall as Grambling State University and Langston University face off in the 2025 Shreveport Kickoff Classic. With deep roots tracing back to the 1911 Red River State Fair Classic, this isn’t just a football game—it’s a cultural reunion of pride, tradition, and unshakable HBCU spirit.

Grambling State and Langston may not meet often, but when they do, history is made. Grambling leads the series 5-1, with the last clash in 2008 ending in a defensive battle, 13-2. The 2025 matchup at Independence Stadium on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. promises to be just as fierce. “This will surely be an epic battle of the big cats,” said Langston AD Donnita Drain-Rogers, nodding to the storied programs that bring both skill and spectacle.

This isn’t Grambling’s first rodeo in Shreveport—they’ve played 20 times in the city, holding a dominant 16-3-1 record. Their last appearance, a 47-21 dismantling of Northwestern State in 2022, still echoes through Independence Stadium. “This matchup not only showcases two storied institutions but also brings our passionate fan base together in a city with deep cultural and athletic ties to Grambling State,” said GSU VP for Athletics Trayvean Scott.

Beyond the gridiron, the Langston Marching Pride Band and GSU’s famed World Famed Tiger Marching Band will deliver show-stopping performances. These aren’t halftime shows—they’re highlights. Expect tailgates, reunions, and an electric crowd that transforms the stadium into a celebration of Black excellence and tradition.

Whether you wear black and gold or rep the blue and orange, this is the game to circle on your calendar. Head to gsutigers.com for tickets and be part of one of the most anticipated HBCU events of the year. Shreveport’s ready—are you?
