The U.S. Supreme Court allowed Donald Trump’s administration to strip about 350,000 Venezuelans living in the United States of a temporary protected status given under his predecessor Joe Biden, as the Republican president moves to ramp up deportations as part of his hardline approach to immigration.
The court granted the Justice Department’s request to lift SanFrancisco-based U.S. District Judge Edward Chen’s order that had halted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s decision to terminate the deportation protection conferred toVenezuelans under the temporary protected status, or TPS, program.
President Donald Trump’sproposed mass deportation planscould impose significant economic costs on the United States, affecting federal budgets, labor markets, inflation, and overall economic growth. Implementing mass deportations could cost up to $968 billion over a decade, according toestimates by the American Immigration Council. This figure encompasses expenses for arrests, detentions, legal proceedings, and expulsions.
To execute such a plan, the U.S. would need to significantly expand its immigration enforcement infrastructure, including hiring between220,000 and 400,000 new employees, which would further strain the federal budget.
Undocumented immigrants are integral to industries like agriculture, construction, and hospitality. Their removal would lead to labor shortages, disrupting these sectors and potentially reducing the U.S. GDP by up to 7.4% by 2028. For every 500,000 undocumented workers deported, an estimated 44,000 U.S.-born workers could lose their jobs due to decreased demand and economic contraction.
The fear of deportation has already led to decreased tax filings among immigrant communities, with some taxpreparers reporting a 50% drop in filings. This behavior could result in up to $479billion in lost revenue over the next decade. Additionally, businesses are experiencing hiring difficulties and reduced consumer activity, further destabilizing local economies.
In summary, Trump’s mass deportation plans could have profound and far-reaching economic consequences, affecting not only undocumented immigrants but also U.S. citizens and the broader economy.
