Southern University students win HBCU Emmy for sports documentary

A film created by Southern University students has won the HBCU Sports Emmy.

During the 2025 Sports Emmy Awards in New York City on Tuesday, May 20, SU student and director Loren Sullivan accepted the Emmy Award for the documentary “The Hidden Sport.”

Sullivan was joined by team members Sydney Cuillier, Ashley Lovelace, Verbon Muhammad, Eric White and Garrett Edgerson.

“The Hidden Sport” explains the drive and endurance required to be a member of the Human Jukebox Marching Band. The students will take the $40,000 grant from Coca-Cola and give portions of it to journalism or media production students, in addition to supporting the Human Jukebox, its media team, and providing scholarships for band students.
