Tennessee State University Gospel Choir Wins Sound Gospel Choir Competition

Written By Lexx Thornton

Congratulations are in order for Tennessee State University’s Gospel Choir, New Direction Gospel Choir, as they took home two awards in Washington D.C. recently. The students competed at the How Sweet The Sound Gospel Choir competition and won in the HBCU Choir Category along with the People’s Choir Award! Excellence being their habit is what the school strives for as just two years ago their Aristocrat of Bands (AOB) Marching Band was the first collegiate marching band and first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to bring home a GRAMMY Award.

“How Sweet The Sound” is a national gospel music competition tour that celebrates the sound of gospel music across American communities.

Established in 2007 and originally sponsored by Verizon, “How Sweet The Sound” rapidly emerged as a significant platform in the American gospel music scene. The competition features choirs, soloists, praise teams, spoken word artists, and dance ensembles. Over the years, it has awarded thousands of dollars to talented contestants.

The national tour has expanded beyond the shores of America, marking its debut in Europe. At its core, “How Sweet The Sound” is deeply committed to authentic community engagement. Their partnerships underscore their dedication to meaningful causes, particularly mental health awareness within black communities. This commitment is highlighted by our collaboration with the AD Council in 2022/2023.
