Princess Opeyemi Bright has been inaugurated as the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom. At just 29 years old, she now serves as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, following her inauguration on Friday, May 16, 2025.

Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Princess Bright’s ascent in British politics is both a personal achievement and a testament to the growing influence of Nigerians abroad. Her political journey began at the age of 22 when she was elected as a councilor. Over the past seven years, she has been a staunch advocate for youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic opportunities within her borough. Her dedication to public service is deeply rooted in her family background. Her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, and her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

Princess Bright’s election is emblematic of a broader trend of Nigerians making significant strides in global politics. Figures such as Kemi Badenoch, the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade; Labour MP Chi Onwurah; Canadian Minister Uzoma Asagwara; and US Representative Esther Agbaje in Minnesota exemplify the increasing political footprint of Nigerians in the diaspora.

As Mayor, Princess Bright aims to foster unity and inclusivity within Barking and Dagenham. Her focus will be on celebrating diversity, promoting local initiatives, and strengthening community bonds. She also plans to support two charities close to her heart: Ab Phab Youth Club, which provides inclusive youth activities, and Crohn’s & Colitis UK, reflecting her personal journey with Crohn’s disease.
