Estimating the cost of a hypothetical World War III

Written By Lexx Thornton

Estimating the cost of a hypothetical World War III (WW3) to the United States is a complex and multifaceted process that depends heavily on the scale, duration, weapons used (e.g.,conventional vs. nuclear), geographic spread, and economic consequences. If World War III were to involve the U.S. and Iran as the primary adversaries, the scope and cost would be dramatically lower than a global or nuclear world war—but still devastating, depending on the escalation and involvement of allies.

Let’s think hypothetically and see what possible costs would come along with World War III. IfIran acquires or uses nuclear weapons or chemical/biological weapons—and the U.S. retaliates with nuclear strikes or regional allies are dragged in (Israel, Saudi Arabia, etc.)—the costs rise steeply. The human casualties would be hundreds of thousands to millions of people. Majorcities could be lost due to infrastructure damage. The cost would be $10-$20 + trillion (but at this point, the term “cost” is almost meaningless—this would be a global catastrophe).

Oil would rise and it could then turn into an oil and global economic impact! Strait of Hormuz disruption could spike global oil prices to $150–200/barrel which would cause a global recession. U.S. economy might contract ~1–3% with a predicted economic fallout of $1-$3 trillion. Vice President JD Vance said Sunday that the U.S. is not at war with Iran, but declined to confirm with 100% confidence that the country’s nuclear sites had been completely destroyed.”We’re not at war with Iran,” Vance said. “We’re at war with Iran’s nuclear program.” Vance also declined to confirm with 100% certainty that Iran’s nuclear sites were completely destroyed, saying instead that he believes the U.S. has “substantially delayed” Iran’s ability to develop a nuclear weapon.
