Louisiana Bans Soda and Candy From SNAP in 2026 Waiver

Written By Lexx Thornton

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said on Sept. 2 that the state’s new federal waiver banning soda, candy, and energy drinks from SNAP purchases is now official. In a video posted to Instagram, Landry held up the signed waiver and thanked President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins for approving the change.

“SNAP beneficiaries are more likely to have higher rates of obesity,” Landry said. “That creates a greater risk for chronic diseases. You will no longer be able to buy sugary candy, energy drinks, soft drinks, or soda pop on food stamps. But guess what? We’re adding rotisserie chicken. We want all of Louisiana to be healthy.” The changes are set to take effect in 2026.

Before the new waiver, SNAP recipients could purchase most grocery items except alcohol, tobacco, personal care products, and hot prepared foods. “Gone are the days of taxpayers subsidizing unhealthy lifestyles and eating habits,” Landry said in August. “With today’s waiver signing, I am proud to say that Louisiana isn’t just participating in the MAHA movement; we are leading it.”

Rollins said the effort is part of the “Make America Healthy Again” campaign launched under Trump. “These state waivers promote healthier options for families in need,” she said.
