MTV to Shut Down Music Channels Worldwide by 2025 End

By Lexx Thornton

MTV is closing the chapter on its music video roots. Paramount Global announced on October 12, 2025, that it will shut down several of its music-focused channels globally by December 31, 2025.

The affected channels include:

  1. MTV 80s
  2. MTV Music
  3. Club MTV
  4. MTV 90s
  5. MTV Live

This move signals a definitive shift away from the music videos and artistic promotions that originally made MTV the “IT” channel for Millennials. The decision is primarily attributed to rapidly changing viewership patterns, with platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Spotify now dominating music consumption, leading to a drastic decline in MTV’s music audience.

The channel closures follow Paramount Global’s recent merger with Skydance Media and are part of a broader $500 million global cost-cutting initiative.

While the specialized music channels are ending, MTV HD will continue to operate, focusing on the reality TV programming that has become the brand’s primary content.
