Tyler Perry Donated $1.4 Million to Organizations Supporting Families Impacted by SNAP Benefit Reductions

Filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry, 56, has stepped forward to combat food insecurity resulting from the ongoing government shutdown, which is now the longest in U.S. history. Perry has donated nearly $1.4 million to several organizations to support families facing the loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

The need for assistance is urgent, as an estimated 42 million Americans are projected to lose SNAP funding in November due to the shutdown. Perry’s significant donation will be distributed to groups like the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Meals on Wheels Atlanta, and Baby2Baby. Having experienced poverty and homelessness himself, Perry emphasized the devastating impact this loss will have, stating, “If you’ve never been poor, then you may not fully understand the life-changing impact SNAP benefits mean to hard-working people… Compassion is not political, it’s humanity.”

A source close to the Madea creator noted that his personal history compels him to help when he sees such injustices. Perry is not alone in using his platform; other celebrities, including Jimmy Kimmel and Wanda Sykes, have also mobilized efforts and spoken out to support vulnerable families affected by the crisis.
