President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm of controversy and drew immediate condemnation from Democratic leaders on Thursday after he reposted a message on his social media platform that explicitly called for the execution of Democratic lawmakers.

The post, which President Trump amplified, urged him to “hang them” in reference to a group of six Democratic members of Congress—all of whom have military or intelligence backgrounds—who had released a video earlier in the week advising U.S. service members to refuse illegal orders. The user’s post suggested that the first U.S. President, George Washington, would have done the same.

The retweet came amid a series of posts by the President in which he called the actions of the six lawmakers “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!!” and suggested their actions were “punishable by DEATH!”

The President’s amplification of the message, which directly advocates for violence against elected officials, has been met with shock and immediate fury from the opposing party.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer issued a forceful condemnation on the Senate floor, stating, “Let’s be crystal clear, the President of the United States is calling for the execution of elected officials. This is an outright threat, and it’s deadly serious.”

Schumer directly linked the President’s latest rhetoric to past episodes of political violence, warning that when President Trump “uses the language of execution and treason, some of his supporters may very well listen.” He called on lawmakers from both parties to condemn the President’s statements “immediately and without qualification.”

The controversy stems from a video released by the six Democratic lawmakers—including Senators Mark Kelly and Elissa Slotkin—who spoke about the constitutional principle that military and intelligence personnel are obligated to refuse unlawful orders.

While the group did not specify which orders they were referencing, their message follows criticism of the Trump administration’s use of U.S. forces in domestic matters and controversial strikes abroad, which have been called into question by legal and national security experts.

In a joint statement released on Thursday, the six lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to the Constitution and pushed back against the threats, stating they would not be deterred.

Meanwhile, a group of more than 300 former national security officials, known as the “Steady State,” released an open letter strongly supporting the lawmakers, calling the principle of refusing unlawful orders “not controversial. It is not partisan. It is not new. And it is the bedrock of lawful civilian control of the military.”

This incident marks a further escalation in the highly charged political rhetoric surrounding President Trump and his critics. While the White House and Defense officials had already slammed the lawmakers’ video, the President’s move to repost a call for their hanging has crossed what many political commentators are calling a dangerous, new line.

Opponents argue that such language from the sitting President risks inciting domestic extremism and violence, while the White House and its supporters have largely dismissed the criticism as an overreaction or an example of “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
