Shonda Rhimes Donates $1.5M to Preserve Emmett Till Barn

In a monumental act of philanthropy aimed at preserving one of the most painful yet pivotal sites in American Civil Rights history, television producer and writer Shonda Rhimes has donated $1.5 million to the Emmett Till Interpretive Center (ETIC). This transformative gift enabled the ETIC to successfully purchase and protect the Mississippi barn where 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally tortured and murdered in 1955.

The acquisition of the barn, located outside of Drew, Mississippi, ensures that this sacred ground will be permanently preserved as a memorial site, preventing it from being exploited by private speculators or falling into disrepair. The purchase was announced by the ETIC on November 23, 2025—a date that would have been the 104th birthday of Emmett’s mother, Civil Rights icon Mamie Till-Mobley.

The barn is a crucial, yet often overlooked, location in the story of Till’s lynching. According to eyewitness accounts, it was inside this barn that Till was taken by two white men—Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam—where he was beaten and killed after being accused of whistling at a white woman in a nearby grocery store.

“The barn where Emmett Till, a child, was tortured and killed will now be saved and protected by the Emmett Till Interpretive Center,” Rhimes said in a statement released by the ETIC. She added that her hope is that “this story never gets lost.”

The ETIC, which has spent two decades committed to restorative justice and truth-telling in the Mississippi Delta, stressed that the purchase was essential to counter historical efforts to erase the barn from the public record.

“This is a monumental achievement in our mission to preserve the complete truth of Emmett Till’s story,” said Patrick Weems, ETIC’s Executive Director. “Without this purchase, this sacred ground could have been destroyed or lost forever. We saved it so that truth could keep shaping us and future generations can stand where history happened.”

Rhimes, the creative force behind hit shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and Bridgerton, was reportedly inspired to make the donation after reading a 2021 article about the site and the ETIC’s efforts. The $1.5 million gift, made through the Rhimes Family Foundation, provided the necessary funds to acquire the property from its previous private owner.

The Center plans to stabilize and protect the barn immediately, ensuring the structure is safe from deterioration and vandalism. Their highest goal is to transform the site into a “sacred space for truth, healing, and national reflection.”

The ETIC is working toward opening the barn as a permanent public memorial by 2030, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of Emmett Till’s murder. This new site will join other locations, including the Tallahatchie County Courthouse and Graball Landing, as part of the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument.
