Howard University has produced some of the entertainment industryās leading stars, including actors, filmmakers, musicians, writers, showrunners, media personalities, and more. The universityās list of alums who have gone on to attain success in entertainment is long, and some Bison are already creating a showbiz splash as current students.
Graduating seniorĀ Kennedi Reece, a theatre major, isĀ set to star in the forthcoming sequel of the classic tv show āA Different World,āĀ created by showrunner and Howard alumĀ Debbie Allen (B.F.A ā72, DHL ā93). Fellow theatre student and seniorĀ Laila PruittĀ starred as Nicole Flenory in the STARZ series āBMF,ā which premiered in 2021 and recently concluded after four seasons.
In July, Pruitt discussed how sheās managing her acting career while being a student at HowardĀ on Fox 5ās āGood Day DCā news program.
āI have to be really proactive and communicative with my team, with my professors, and my production,ā Pruitt said in the segment. āBMF has been really great with working with me on that. They want me to pursue an education ⦠I turn my work in early at school and I get on that plane and go.ā

The 2025 Netflix teen drama series āForever,ā created by Mara Brock Akil, is an adaptation of Judy Blumeās 1975 novel of the same name. Akilās āForeverā follows the on again, off again love story of two teenagers, Keisha Clark (played by Lovie Simone) and Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.), as they navigate being each otherās āfirstsā in several life-altering ways. In addition to the showās depiction of falling in love, heartbreak, and the pivotal shaping of oneās identity during formidable adolescent years, āForeverā also tells the story of an ambition young Black girl who strives for greatness in the face of challenging circumstances. Keisha is a high-achieving track star who has her sights set on attending Howard University, the major goal she works to achieve throughout the showās first season. Despite a traumatic experience that nearly upended her life and her academic pursuits, Keisha (spoiler alert!) sees her dream come true when sheās accepted into Howard and becomes a member of the Bison family.
Jami Ramberan, an associate professor of film and television and the assistant chair of the universityās Department of Media, Journalism, and Film, noted inĀ The Digās article spotlighting āForever,āĀ that seeing āHoward framed as a place of personal growth, intellectual excellence, and community in a series like Forever is monumental. It tells Black teens ā especially Black girls ā that their dreams are valid, and their stories deserve to be centered with care and complexity.ā
āForeverā star Michael Cooper Jr. paid a visit to Howardās campus in September, joining theatre professorĀ Eric Ruffin (B.F.A. ā88)Ā forĀ a fireside chat discussing the breakout show. Cooper candidly opened up about how he wanted to portray his character Justin onscreen.
