HBCU graduates bring college inspiration to kids in Wichita

The Wichita HBCU Alumni Collective held an event on Saturday to inspire more kids to go to college.

At the Boys and Girls Club on Saturday, the collective held two panels and a speed networking event. They spoke to kids about their experiences and the opportunities they received while attending an HBCU, which stands for Historically Black College or University.

The goal of the event was to inspire local kids from marginalized communities to attend college at an HBCU.

“They should know that there are tons of opportunities available to them and they don’t have to limit themselves to their ZIP codes or their neighborhoods they’re from,” said Kiana Knolland, a Wichita native and graduate of Howard University. “They can know, like, ‘wow, I can go off to college, I can come back to Wichita and do great things, or I can do great things in another city.’”

The members of the Wichita HBCU Alumni Collective hope that the event showed kids in Wichita that they should dream big and not limit themselves to where they’re from.
