North Carolina Central University has been tapped amongst the top universities in the country for their online programs.

According to the U.S. News & World Report, NCCU ranks third among HBCU institutions offering bachelor’s degree programs online and ninth in North Carolina overall.

Their report included factors like student engagement, faculty credentials and quality of service.

According to NCCU, online programs are the fastest growing sector at the school. They attribute their success to offering flexible learning options, especially for those looking to go to college while they work.

“These rankings show the intentional work outlined in NCCU’s strategic plan to broaden access and deliver programs that align with today’s workforce, fueling continued enrollment growth,” said Dr. Kimberly Phifer-McGhee, associate vice chancellor for extended studies and student support, in a statement. “Through NCCU Online, we are creating pathways for adult learners and veterans to advance their careers while ensuring our programs respond to real community and industry needs.”

NCCU also ranked second in the nation among veterans who look for online diploma programs at HBCUs.

Online programs remain the fastest-growing sector at NCCU, fueled by 47% enrollment increase in fall 2025 through NCCU and the Project Kitty Hawk partnership. Military enrollment also increased by 6.9 percent.

NCCU was the first in the University of North Carolina System to launch a degree program, the RN-to-BSN, through the Project Kitty Hawk initiative for adult learners.

CBS 17 previously reported growth overall has increased for the university. NCCU’s incoming class includes 251 online students, a 22% increase from fall 2024. The university offers 37 online programs at the bachelor’s and graduate degree levels, as well as certificate options.
