Washington, D.C. — April 16, 2026 — In a powerful tribute to history, culture, and community, the HBCU News Store officially open its doors at Washington, D.C.’s iconic Union Station on April 16, 2026, in honor of D.C. Emancipation Day—the date marking the abolition of slavery in the nation’s capital in 1862.
Timed intentionally to coincide with this historic day, the opening of the HBCU News Store represents more than a retail launch—it is a celebration of the enduring legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and their profound role in shaping generations of leaders, scholars, and innovators.
“Opening on Emancipation Day is deeply intentional,” said Sandra Long, Founder of HBCU News and CEO of SLA Worldwide. “This store is rooted in the belief that education is one of the most powerful extensions of freedom. HBCUs have long stood at that intersection—where opportunity, excellence, and community come together. We are honored to open our doors on a day that represents such a pivotal moment in American history.”
Located in one of the busiest transportation hubs in the country, the HBCU News Store is designed as a modern cultural destination—bringing together:
• Curated HBCU apparel and merchandise
• Books, gifts, and collectibles celebrating Black history and achievement
• Products from Black-owned brands and HBCU-affiliated creators
• A storytelling-driven retail experience rooted in legacy, pride, and community
The store will serve both travelers and locals, offering a space where culture, education, and commerce intersect in a meaningful and accessible way.
April 16, 1862 marked a defining step forward in the long journey toward freedom in the United States. By opening on this date, HBCU News underscores the direct connection between emancipation and education—and the vital role HBCUs continue to play in advancing equity, opportunity, and excellence.
The opening also signals a broader vision for HBCU News as a growing platform dedicated to:
• Amplifying HBCU voices and stories
• Supporting HBCU students, alumni, and institutions
• Expanding culturally relevant retail experiences across the country
Opening day will feature a celebratory atmosphere welcoming visitors, travelers, and members of the community to experience the store and commemorate Emancipation Day together.
