Shelton State first community college contributing to HBCU Digital Collection

Shelton State Community College has become the first community college to contribute historical material to the HBCU Digital Collection. Selections from the C.A. Fredd State archival collection are now digitized and publicly available as part of the HBCU Digital Collection, hosted by the HBCU Digital Library Trust.

“Expanding capacity for digitization, discovery and preservation of HBCU archives and historical collections is at the center of the HBCU Digital Library Trust initiative,” said HBCU Digital Library Program Director Andrea Jackson Gavin. “Through one digital repository – the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Digital Collection – researchers can access and explore a wealth of photographs, audio and video recordings, annual publications, and manuscripts that showcase history and culture found within HBCUs. We are honored that Shelton State Community College is not only a contributing institution but is also the first community college to establish a digital collection in our repository. We are excited that aspects of Shelton State’s history promoting educational access and opportunity through the consolidation and evolution of multiple institutions – including the historic C. A. Fredd State Technical College – will be broadly discoverable for research, learning, knowledge production, and teaching.”

As part of its annual service project, the SSCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa assisted in the selection, description and processing of the material chosen for contribution to the collection.

“We are honored to be the first community college to host their archival material in the HBCU Digital Library Trust’s Digital Collection,” said SSCC President Jonathan Koh. “It is even more special to us that our Phi Theta Kappa students lead the endeavor with our College’s Archivist, Alexandra Scissom. We are very proud of their work as it represents a decorated history of excellence harkening back to the wonderful leadership and programming at the Fredd State Technical College to the thriving Shelton State Community College.”
