Nightcap is coming to The Hill.
Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end and Savannah State legend Shannon Sharpe, former All-Pro receiver Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and seven-time NBA All-Star Joe Johnson announced that Prairie View A&M will be the first stop on Nightcap’s HBCU Tour.
The live show is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4, at the William “Billy” J. Nicks Building, better known as the Baby Dome.
Two days later, Prairie View A&M hosts Texas Southern in the 41st Labor Day Classic at 11 a.m. CT Sunday, Sept. 6, at Panther Stadium. The SWAC West rivalry game will air nationally on ESPN2.
With Nightcap opening Labor Day Classic weekend on Prairie View’s campus, one of the Houston area’s biggest HBCU football weekends is getting an additional national spotlight.
The Hosts Have HBCU Connections
Sharpe’s connection to HBCUs begins with Savannah State, where he developed from an overlooked college prospect into a future NFL star. He eventually became a three-time Super Bowl champion and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and Black College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
He also has used his media platform to discuss issues affecting Black college athletics.
In September 2024, after Florida A&M played Miami, Sharpe urged HBCU athletic departments to demand larger guarantees when scheduling games against major programs.
“HBCUs, when these Power Five schools ask you to come, don’t y’all take less than a million dollars,” Sharpe said on Nightcap.
Chad Johnson has an even more personal connection to Prairie View A&M.
His daughter, Chadé Johnson, attended Prairie View A&M and graduated in May 2025. Johnson’s experiences visiting the campus helped turn him into an outspoken admirer of HBCU culture.
He has encouraged people who attended predominantly white institutions to experience an HBCU homecoming at least once.
Now, Nightcap is bringing that enthusiasm directly to an HBCU campus.
Why Nightcap’s HBCU Tour Matters
National sports media has increasingly recognized HBCU campuses as destinations for live programming.
ESPN’s “First Take” visited Florida A&M and Winston-Salem State in 2023 before taking the show to Howard, Tennessee State and Morehouse College in 2024.
Nightcap represents something different.
The show launched in September 2023 as a collaboration between Sharpe’s Shay Shay Media and The Volume. It developed into a major digital sports platform built largely around direct interaction between its hosts and online audience.
That distinction makes an HBCU campus tour significant.
Instead of Black college athletics appearing as a segment within a broader national sports show, HBCU campuses become the destination.
And Prairie View A&M gets the first opportunity.
The timing also comes during a strong period for Panthers athletics.
Prairie View A&M won the 2026 SWAC men’s basketball tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where the Panthers defeated Lehigh for the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history.
Football coach Tremaine Jackson, meanwhile, enters his second season after leading Prairie View A&M to the 2025 SWAC championship and a berth in the Celebration Bowl. The Panthers open the 2026 season Aug. 29 at Tarleton State before hosting Texas Southern in the Labor Day Classic.
Nightcap Has Taken the Show on the Road Before
Nightcap has experimented with live events before.
Sharpe and Johnson announced an eight-city “NSFW Tour” in 2025 that was scheduled to begin June 13 in Baltimore and include stops in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Chicago and Detroit.
The tour was postponed after a civil lawsuit was filed against Sharpe in Nevada in April 2025. Sharpe denied the allegations.
The lawsuit was resolved through a private settlement in July 2025 and dismissed with prejudice.
The newly announced HBCU Tour has a different format. Instead of an arena-style summer schedule, Nightcap is building live shows around college campuses and the football calendar.
Prairie View A&M gets the first one.
What’s Next for the Nightcap HBCU Tour?
Nightcap has not announced the remainder of its HBCU Tour schedule.
It remains unclear how many campuses the show will visit, which schools will follow Prairie View A&M, or whether the tour could extend beyond football season.
Additional details surrounding the Sept. 4 Prairie View A&M appearance also are expected.
What is known is significant: Nightcap is taking its platform directly to HBCU campuses, and Prairie View A&M gets the first opportunity to host Sharpe, Chad Johnson and Joe Johnson.
Two days later, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern will renew one of HBCU football’s longstanding rivalries before a national television audience.
For Labor Day Classic weekend, The Hill will have plenty of attention.
