As HBCU homecoming is a time of celebration, a group of Fort Valley State students used the week’s festivities to encourage their fellow classmates to hit the polls ahead of this year’s midterm election.
Fort Valley State held a get-out-the-vote rally complete with food trucks and a cruise-in on Wednesday. The event came stacked with music, food, a car show and an educational scavenger hunt.
“It’s really impactful to get their information, and we’re having fun,” said Student Government Association President Jenniya Sams. “Our administration is big on resources, students’ leadership and bringing back the fun and education, so having to have all these things overlap has been amazing.”
Sams said an event like this could not be possible without the community support and that the rally shows how voting affects all areas of life.
Fort Valley’s homecoming festivities will continue through the week.
The University has a Greek step show planned for Friday, with the homecoming parade and football game against Lane College on Saturday.
