President, Dr. Jaffus Hardrick, along with a delegation of 11 FMUâs student leaders traveled to our stateâs capital for the 2024 Legislative Session.
Now in full swing, the 60-day session began on Tuesday, January 9 and is scheduled to end on Friday, March 8.
During this time frame, legislators will be making decisions that will impact our students, public education, and the entire State of Florida.
Last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis stated his proposed 2024-2025 budget would include additional funding for Floridaâs Historically Black Colleges and Universities to support facility hardening needs.
On Wednesday, representatives from Florida A&M University, Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters University, and Florida Memorial University were in Tallahassee to push for funding to address the security needs on our campuses.
Yesterday, the House Higher Education Appropriations Committee released their proposed budget, and the Senate Education Appropriations Committee reviewed and discussed the 2024-2025 budget.
The 11 members representing FMUâs Student Government Association and Lions Entertainment Board; Shante Daley, Larry Chinn, Jaylin Clinch, Akil Rose, Mackenson Orne, Theresa Hayden, Morgan Cameron, Maziah Davis, Jevaughn Smith, Malcolm Lovett, and Shakira Holmes, had the privilege to witness government in action when they attended the state appropriation and allocation sessions.
During the two-day visit, FMUâs delegation also visited the Florida Historic Capitol Museum, the Florida Supreme Court, and met with various Florida State Officials and State Representatives.
