Texas Southern University is one of 10 HBCUs selected for the HBCU Golf Consortium initiative, a pilot program under the leadership of Make Golf Your Thing, a collaborative industry movement working to accelerate golfâs evolution by making it more diverse and inclusive.
As a pilot member of the HBCU Golf Consortium initiative, which focuses on the business of golf and career pathways, TSU hosted the Business of Golf information session during which golf industry reps were on campus to provide TSU students a vehicle to better understand and appreciate the industryâs reach, power, and possibilities.
âWe are grateful that the HBCU leaders are welcoming the golf industry to their campuses and inviting us to meet the students as we aim to strengthen our industry through greater diversity,â said Dr. Michael Cooper, USGA Senior Regional Advisor and a co-chair of Make Golf Your Careerâs HBCU effort. âWe hope the relationships and inroads we are forging to the very capable talent that exists at HBCUs will create opportunities for students as well as the golf industry.â
Under the banner, âMake Golf Your Career,â several golf industry talent recruiting representatives were on campus to directly engage students in discussions about working in the $102 billion golf industry. A variety of companies and organizations were represented including PGA TOUR, LPGA, USGA, PGA of America, Golf Course Superintendents and golf equipment company PXG.
âTexas Southern University prides itself on exposing students to possibilities for their lives that they would have never imagined,â said interim president Dr. Mary Evans Sias. âWe are pleased that Make Golf Your Thing selected our campus for the golf simulator and for the opportunities of which our students will be able to take advantage as a result of this partnership. The game of golf, and the business therein, are multifaceted. We look forward to the ways this opportunity will enable our students to succeed in this lucrative industry.â
