The College of Engineering at the University of Delaware has recently welcomed its first cohort of students from Delaware State University to participate in the Summer Engineering Research Experience, a program within the two institutions’ dual-degree engineering partnership.
In 2021, DSU established a formal partnership with the University of Delaware to provide its students with an opportunity to earn an engineering degree – an option not currently available at the historically Black university. Through the dual-degree program, students complete three years of study at DSU in the STEM field of their choosing, followed by two years of engineering coursework at the University of Delaware. Students who enroll in the dual-degree program receive their bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in engineering in only five years.
As part of the degree program, students from DSU will attend the University of Delaware’s Summer Engineering Research Experience each summer. This summer, the program’s first cohort of students received personalized academic advising and research mentorship from University of Delaware professors, attended professional development workshops, and participated in social networking activities.
According to the universities, several companies have expressed interest in developing internship opportunities for students enrolled in the dual-degree program. The program plans to offer summer internships for its students beginning in 2025.
