‘We must know our past to know our future’: Miles College celebrates Black History Month

By Bryce Oselen

The month of February is nationally recognized as Black History Month. Students attending Miles College say they’re using the month to learn more about their history.

Founded in 1898, Miles College’s history is rich, Jalen Stewart serves as Mr. Miles College and says the month of February at his university compares to no other.

“Once I first got here to this HBCU, I was just here. I’m a first-generation college student, but I put in a little bit of work myself and did some research to understand, what’s the importance of this, and as you see, I’m standing here today as a Black kind of the fifth Mr. Miles College,” stated Stewart.

The University plans to host events throughout the month honoring Black History.

“We started with movie nights, we started with lecture, we have movie nights, we have other engagements for our students, and hopefully we’ll be traveling to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Selma bridge crossing on March 7th,” explained Candice Hardy Director of Resources Miles College. As Stewart continues to serve his student body, he hopes to inspire younger generations to attend a HBCU.

“Black History Month, when you understand the depths of it, and you understand the work that was put in for us to be able to walk around free and be Black kings, that should be enough to bring you to a HBCU,” explained Stewart.
