Hampton University Senior Named Schwarzman Scholarship Finalist

Courtesy of Hampton University Kamaria Horton, a Hampton University Honors student majoring in computer science, has been named a national finalist in the Schwarzman Scholarship competition.  The graduate-level scholarship, awarded annually to 100 U.S. citizens and 100 international citizens, is in its seventh year. Despite its recent establishment, it is a coveted prize, established and endowed by American billionaire, Stephen A. Schwarzman. The award has quickly become one of the most respected, post-graduate scholarships in the world — taking its place alongside other leading awards such as the Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright, Mitchell, and Gates-Cambridge Scholarships. Howard University Election Project Kicks Off as Journalism Students Prepare for Midterm Elections

Holmes With the 2022 midterm elections sparking fears about everything from voter suppression to threats to democracy, Howard University is doing its part to weed through the misinformation. Journalism students and faculty in the Department of Media, Journalism and Film in the Cathy Hughes School of Communications will be covering local, state and national races, as well as issues important to the Black community through the 2022 Howard University Election Project. Students will work Election Day from approximately 6:30 am before the polls open until the wee hours of Wednesday morning when many of the results will be in.

By Sara Weissman Leaders of historically Black colleges and universities have been working to achieve Research-1 status in recent years, the coveted Carnegie Foundation classification reserved for doctoral universities that demonstrate a certain level of research prowess. No HBCU currently holds such a classification, but administrators at some colleges say the designation feels increasingly attainable after years of striving and strategizing and a record year of securing research dollars. Veterinary Alumni establishes two major programs to assist the Tuskegee Veterinary Medicine College

By Anissa Riley The Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine is pleased to announce the establishment of two distinct programs in the college supported by the Tuskegee Veterinary Medical Alumni Association (TVMAA): The TVMAA Endowed Scholarship program and The TVMAA Endowed Chair. The TVMAA Endowed Scholarship was established with a $45,000 gift from the veterinary medical alumni association. Tuskegee’s veterinary scholarship committee identifies the awardees annually, based upon criteria developed by the college. This scholarship is established to provide financial assistance for TUCVM students with demonstrated financial need. It is intended to supplement other financial resources available to the recipients

Blackstone LaunchPad Partners with NCCU to Provide Resources for Student Entrepreneurs

This partnership is part of the Blackstone Charitable Foundation’s previously announced commitment to providing $40 million dollars in support of entrepreneurial skill-building resources for underserved communities. Joining NCCU are Bowie State University, Morgan State University and North Carolina A&T University. Hampton’s Gamma Theta Chapter AKA Raises More Than $160,000 For New Scholarship and to Add to Existing Fund

Courtesy of Hampton University More than 400 donors have contributed more than $160,000 in just two months – to raise funds for the scholarship campaign initiated by alumni members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Gamma Theta Chapter of Hampton University. This campaign was initiated in honor of this chapter’s 75th anniversary. The campaign began in April 2022 and will continue through June 30, 2023, where total contributes are expected to top the goal of $175,000 in donations. TSU Political Science Team Tops in State Competition, Wins Moot Court Challenge Championship

The TSU team earned the title of state champions recently after coming out on top in the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislative Appellate Moot Court Collegiate Challenge, or AMC3. They beat out seven other teams in the March 19-20 competition, which was held remotely due to the pandemic. Fayetteville State University Faculty Win Grand Prize in International Music Competition

Courtesy of Fayetteville State University Fayetteville State University (FSU) faculty members, Dr. Amanda Virelles and Dr. Kristina Henckel were awarded the Grand Prize in the International Youth Music Competition’s Chamber, Duo, Concerto category. The pair, also known as 4HANDS Piano Duo, earned the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall in August, 2023. The competition considers entries from around the world, including Belgium, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom and the USA.
