North Carolina A&T State University

North Carolina Central University, a state-supported liberal arts institution, is a public, historically black university in Durham, North Carolina. Founded by Dr. James E. Shepard in affiliation with the Chautauqua movement in 1909, it was supported by private funds from both Northern and Southern philanthropists.

With an enrollment of over 12,556 students, North Carolina A&T is the largest historically black university in the U.S., a position it has held since 2014. According to U.S. News & World Report, the university is ranked sixth nationally among historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and first among public HBCUs.
