Prospective students applying for admission to Lincoln University of Missouri may now submit their application with or without ACT/SAT scores. This change to the university’s admission requirements immediately goes into effect.
“Since our founding in 1866, Lincoln University has helped students rise above barriers to quality education. This change to our admissions policy removes an obstacle that often hinders prospective students,” said Lincoln University President Dr. John Moseley. “Making standard test scores optional is another step forward in our commitment to opening doors for students, to promoting equity, diversity and accessibility.”
Missouri residents are now eligible for Lincoln University with a high school diploma or GED certificate. Non-Missouri residents are admitted based on their successful completion of high school with a 2.0 or greater grade point average. Some Lincoln University academic programs may still require an ACT/SAT score as part of the admissions criteria for the respective discipline.
At the national level, the use of standardized testing has been criticized for racial disparity and bias, and colleges and universities’ elimination of standardized testing (or adoption of test-optional policies) increased notably during the pandemic’s rise.
According to Moseley, Lincoln University values drive and potential when considering students for admissions. “Test scores often fail to reflect what a student can achieve,” said Moseley. “We look at GPA, high school performance, and their commitment to excellence. At Lincoln, we provide students with support needed to succeed, and that support starts with their college acceptance.”
Lincoln’s Blue Tiger Advantage scholarship, awarded automatically to qualifying freshmen, will still require students to have an ACT/SAT score for the Class of 2022. The university is working to establish a model that does not require a test score, to be implemented for incoming freshmen in fall 2023. The scholarship ranges from $500 to $3,250 per year and is renewable for up to eight semesters.
