 The Howard University Department of Economics will host the American Economic Association Summer Training and Scholarship Program (AEASP) for the third year, this summer. The program is set to operate at Howard through 2026.
Since 1974, the AEASP has increased diversity in the field of economics by preparing talented undergraduates for doctoral programs in economics and related disciplines. AEASP is a prestigious program that enables students to develop and solidify technical skills in preparation for the rigors of graduate studies. As many as 20% of PhDs awarded to minorities in economics over the past 20 years are graduates of the program.
The program, led by Omari H. Swinton, Ph.D., chair and professor of economics, operates in support of increasing the pipeline of underrepresented minority economists. Students receive two months of intensive training in microeconomics, math, econometrics and research methods with leading faculty. Students can earn up to 12 college credits during the summer semester.
“We are excited to welcome students to Washington, DC and Howard University to be immersed in the policy community. Our hope is that the scholars will be inspired to earn doctoral degrees in Economics and bring their unique viewpoints to the economics profession.”
This summer, 40 students from undergraduate institutions around the country will join the program at Howard as AEASP scholars and 8 Howard University doctoral candidates will join as fellows. This year’s sponsors are Amazon, Women’s Institute for Science, Equity and Race (WISER), National Science Foundation, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, National Economic Association, American Society of Hispanic Economists, and the Association for Economic Research of Indigenous Peoples.
