On November 14, the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, in partnership with WHUR 96.3 held the 45th Annual Food2Feed Radiothon.
A longtime tradition spearheaded by Howard University’s radio station, the Food2Feed Radiothon is an initiative that brings students, staff, and community members together to collect money and food items to provide families throughout the Washington, DC region with meals over the holiday season.
Dedicated Howard University students lined the streets of Georgia Avenue from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. waiving signs and encouraging drivers to donate as a way of giving back to local families. Non-perishable canned goods were collected at the WHUR 96.3 studios.
Marlee Williams, a sophomore studying political science from Lakefield, Minnesota, didn’t mind being out on a cold and windy morning, especially since it was for a good cause. “It was great to see so many students and community members support Food2Feed. It shows that the community really cares for one another,” said Williams.
Since 1978, WHUR 96.3 has been helping to provide holiday meals to local families and individuals in need. This year, the Howard University community raised more than $25,000 for families struggling to make ends meet. Monetary donations are being accepted online until November 21
Jael Johnson, a senior studying health management from Alabaster, Alabama, was overcome with emotion as she expressed just how grateful she felt to be able to impact others during the Thanksgiving holiday. “Food is a big part of Thanksgiving, and to know that we get to make a difference in someone else’s holiday is an amazing feeling. It’s the Howard way,” says Johnson.
The Food2Feed Radiothon is a testament to the power of unity in creating positive change within the University community and beyond. The Howard University community is hopeful that the donations collected will be truly impactful this holiday season for DMV families.
