A trio of HBCU alumni have donated $2 million to Morehouse College and Spelman College. Dr. George Crawford, Dr. Marcus Crawford, and Dr. Christine Crawford teamed up to donate money to their alma mater. George and Marcus graduated from Morehouse in 1996 and 1998, and Christine graduated from Spelman in 1994.
Morehouse is set to receive $1 million, and Spelman is as well. Dr. George Crawford Jr. spoke about the decision to give a donation to both institutions.
“We are who we are because of Morehouse and Spelman. Both institutions created a solid foundation that allowed us to go out and be successful, which is why when my brother, my sister, and I were talking about making a donation to Morehouse and Spelman, it was a no-brainer.”
Morehouse Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Hodan Hassan, spoke highly of the gift from the Crawford family.
“We are deeply grateful to the Crawford siblings for their extraordinary generosity and for the spirit of family unity that their gift inspires. This transformative investment will strengthen the College’s future and accelerate our campaign to raise funds for the new Campus Center, which will foster the development of outstanding future leaders.”
The Crawfords have a legacy in the AUC as their father, Dr. George Crawford Sr., graduated from Morehouse in 1962. Following his matriculation, Crawford Sr. became a dentist. His children followed in his footsteps in the medical field, as George Jr. is a general surgeon and a medical technology entrepreneur. Marcus works as a plastic surgeon and is the founder of the company CPS Infusion, and Christine worked for the CDC as an epidemiologist.
