The 2026 CIAA football race is approaching its finish line, but the final weekend could produce several different championship matchups.
With one week remaining, Virginia Union leads the conference at 7-0, followed by Johnson C. Smith and Virginia State at 6-1. Fayetteville State sits fourth at 5-2, while Bowie State is fifth at 4-3.
The expanded championship-weekend format means four teams will advance to Durham, North Carolina, Nov. 13-14. The top two will compete for the CIAA championship Saturday, while the third- and fourth-place teams will meet in Friday Night Blitz.
Here’s how the race could unfold.
Virginia Union controls its destiny
Virginia Union strengthened its position with a 62-0 victory over Lincoln (Pa.). The Panthers improved to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in conference play, extending their winning streak to eight games.
Their final assignment is a Nov. 7 showdown against Virginia State.
A victory would give Virginia Union an undefeated 8-0 conference record and guarantee the No. 1 seed.
If Johnson C. Smith also defeats Livingstone, the Golden Bulls would finish 7-1 and secure the other championship-game position.
However, a Virginia Union victory combined with a Johnson C. Smith loss would create a 6-2 tie between the Golden Bulls and Virginia State for second place. Johnson C. Smith owns the head-to-head advantage after defeating the Trojans 39-33 in overtime.
Virginia State can shake up the standings
Virginia State has an opportunity to change everything against the Panthers.
A victory would improve the Trojans to 7-1 and hand Virginia Union its first conference loss.
If Johnson C. Smith also wins, all three programs would finish 7-1, forcing the CIAA’s multi-team tiebreaking procedures to determine the championship-game participants.

If Johnson C. Smith loses, Virginia State and Virginia Union would finish 7-1, with Virginia State holding the head-to-head advantage.
Johnson C. Smith has a path
The Golden Bulls control their immediate assignment against Livingstone. A victory would move them to 7-1 and keep them firmly in championship contention.
Their victory over Virginia State could become particularly important if the standings produce a tie. A loss, however, would leave the Golden Bulls vulnerable.
Fayetteville State holds the advantage
Fayetteville State improved to 5-2 with a 21-17 victory over Bowie State, giving the Broncos an important head-to-head advantage.
A victory over Winston-Salem State would move Fayetteville State to 6-2 and strengthen its postseason position.
Bowie State, now 4-3, needs a win over Lincoln and a Fayetteville State loss to tie at 5-3. The Broncos would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
With four postseason positions available, the final weekend will determine who gets a shot at the championship and who must settle for Friday night.
