$16M in Grants Support African American Civil Rights Sites

Courtesy of Benedict College Following a tour of Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey, National Park Service (NPS) Director Chuck Sams announced the award of $16,247,500 in African American Civil Rights grants. Listed as a National Historic Landmark, Hinchcliffe Stadium is one of a few surviving Negro League baseball stadiums and previously received an African American Civil Rights Grant in 2018. Xavier, IBM Launch Cybersecurity Leadership Center

Courtesy of Xavier University Xavier University and several other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) announced that they will work with IBM (NYSE: IBM) to establish virtual Cybersecurity Leadership Centers to prepare students for cybersecurity careers. This resource complements the technology and cybersecurity coursework that students already receive from Xavier’s computer science program. The other participating HBCUs in the initiative include North Carolina A&T State University, Clark Atlanta University, Morgan State University, South Carolina State University, and the Southern University System. Howard Acquires Historic Gordon Parks Photo Collection

By Misha Cornelius Howard University and The Gordon Parks Foundation today announced a historic acquisition of 244 photographs representing the arc of Gordon Parks’s career over five decades. The breadth of the collection—which spans Parks’s earliest photographs in the 1940s through the 1990s—makes it one of the most comprehensive resources for the study of Parks’s life and work anywhere in the world. The Gordon Parks Legacy collection, a combined gift and purchase, will be housed in the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center. Organized thematically by subject into 15 study sets, the photographs serve as a rich repository for the development of exhibitions and multidisciplinary curricula

Tuskegee Vet School Honors Class of 2022 Graduates

By Tuskegee University The Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) Class of 2022 had 47 new doctors of veterinary medicine recognized on April 30.  Tuskegee University held its in-person Spring Commencement Graduate and Professional Schools Ceremony at the General “Chappie” James Center followed by the college’s in-person Veterinary Medicine Oath and Hooding Ceremony at the university’s Chapel.  Thirty of the 47 students graduated with honors. They included four “Summa Cum Laude,” eight “Magna Cum Laude” and 18 “Cum Laude.”  Both ceremonies were live-streamed for those not in attendance to view and are also available on the university’s YouTube channel

Grambling State Honors Golden Graduates with Reunion Events

Courtesy of Grambling State University While more than 400 degrees were conferred during Grambling State University’s two commencement ceremonies, it was 61 GSU alumni who might have had the biggest time of all as they returned to campus as “Golden Graduates” from the classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972.
