Class is in session at HBCU Early College Prep, New York City’s first high school dedicated to preparing students for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Located in Jamaica, Queens, the school officially opened on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by NYC Mayor Eric Adams, Public Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos, and Delaware State University President (DSU) Dr. Tony Allen, according to a news release from the Mayor’s Office. The school launched in partnership with DSU and welcomed its inaugural class of 100 students, marking the start of a transformative academic year. “There’s just not enough exposure to HBCUs across the country,”

HBCU Threats Spark Lockdowns, Lawmakers Demand Action

Five Historically Black Colleges and Universities received threats, prompting lockdowns and cancellations. Louisiana Congressmen Cleo Fields and Troy Carter condemned the threats against the HBCU campuses. The congressmen, both HBCU graduates, called for an end to violent rhetoric and a full investigation. The threats followed the assassination of conservative figure Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Louisiana Congressmen Cleo Fields and Troy Carter are alarmed and angered by a wave of threats to Southern University and other HBCU campuses in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University that has all colleges on edge. Trump Seeks $58M for Security After Rising Political Violence

By Scott Wong and Raquel Coronell Uribe The Trump administration is asking Congress to approve an additional $58 million for security to protect the executive and judicial branches following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a leadership aide confirmed to NBC News on Sunday. The Trump administration supports adding more money to protect members of Congress, too, but deferred to the legislative branch on how to do that, the leadership aide told NBC News. The request comes as Republicans and Democrats negotiate a stopgap funding bill and as lawmakers have beefed up their personal security, moved events indoors or canceled them altogether following Kirk’s killing in Utah

HBCUs Cancel Classes, Lock Down After Campus Threats

Several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been forced to alter campus life this week after receiving potential threats. Alabama State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, and Clark Atlanta University all enacted emergency safety measures on Thursday, canceling classes, locking down campuses, and urging students and staff to shelter in place. “We have seen too much violence on our campuses, whether it was the brazen murder of Charlie Kirk yesterday or the threats against these HBCUs today. Colleges and Universities should be a place of free expression and debate in a way that’s respectful, engaging, and productive,” Rev.

Trump Admin to Destroy $9.7M in Contraceptives Abroad

The Trump administration has decided to destroy $9.7m worth of contraceptives rather than send them abroad to women in need. A state department spokesperson confirmed that the decision had been made – a move that will cost US taxpayers $167,000. The contraceptives are primarily long-acting, such as IUDs and birth control implants, and were almost certainly intended for women in Africa, according to two senior congressional aides, one of whom visited a warehouse in Belgium that housed the contraceptives. It is not clear to the aides whether the destruction has already been carried out, but said they had been told that it was set

Charlie Kirk Fatally Shot at Utah Valley University Event

Written By Lexx Thornton Conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk died Wednesday after he was shot at an event at Utah Valley University. He was 31 years old.  A suspect has not been identified, and state authorities said Wednesday evening a “manhunt” for the shooter is still in progress. Two people who were taken into custody earlier were not tied to the shooting and were later released.  Utah Valley University police said they were going “building to building” to evacuate people.  President Trump posted on Truth Social: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. Teachers Fear Smithsonian Review Could Rewrite U.S. History

High school history teacher Katharina Matro often pulls materials from the Smithsonian Institution website as she assembles her lessons. She trusts its materials, which don’t require the same level of vetting as other online resources. She uses documents and other primary sources it curates for discussions of topics like genocide and slavery. As the White House presses for changes at the Smithsonian, she’s worried she may not be able to rely on it in the same way. “We don’t want a partisan history,” said Matro, a teacher in Bethesda, Maryland. “We want the history that’s produced by real historians.” Far beyond

Judge Blocks Trump From Firing Fed Governor Lisa Cook

By Steve Kopack A federal judge on Tuesday granted a temporary restraining order blocking President Donald Trump’s firing of Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook for now. The ruling means Cook will remain on the board of the central bank until her case is heard at length. She is allowed to continue carrying out her work during that time. In granting the order, U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb said that “the Court will enter an injunction directing [Fed Chair Jerome] Powell and the Board of Governors to allow Cook to continue to operate as a member of the Board for the pendency of this litigation.” “The public interest

Supreme Court to Rule on Trump’s Emergency Tariff Powers

By Lawrence Hurley and Steve Kopack The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to quickly decide a high-stakes showdown over President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imports from foreign nations, a signature policy of his second term. At issue is Trump’s power to unilaterally impose tariffs, without congressional approval, under a law reserved for use in times of emergency. The court took two different cases covering most of Trump’s tariffs, one of which the Trump administration filed last week after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled Aug. 29 that he exceeded his authority. The other case is a similar challenge brought by two

RFK Jr. Faces Backlash Over Nutrition Education Mandate

By Kathryn Palmer Even as lawmakers, medical professionals and his own kin call on secretary of health and human services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to resign for spreading misinformation, medical education organizations are on the hook to give Kennedy their plan for expanding nutrition education requirements by Wednesday. It’s one of the latest public health directives Kennedy has put forth to advance his so-called Make America Healthy Again agenda, which is heavily focused on addressing chronic illness through diet and lifestyle choices. “The chronic disease epidemic is the most urgent and costly health crisis in America today. We can’t afford another decade
